Resolutions for Wellness

David Van : December 30, 2013 4:52 pm : blog

Start the New Year off with a commitment to yourself. Sigma Wellness has some ideas to get you on track for a ‘New Year, New You’, and how to make your resolution come to life!

Be Positive and Specific

Saying “I want to be healthier this year” or “I want to lose weight” is a proclamation, not a resolution – it’s like making a wish. It’s also vague. How do you want to be healthier? What is the purpose of your resolution? Make your language positive, focused, and incorporate the reason why you are making your resolution.
Some examples:

Change your “I want to get healthier this year” into “I am (improving my flexibility and strength this year by starting Pilates so I have more energy)”.

Change your “I want to lose weight” into “I am losing 15 pounds to feel great for my family reunion in June.”

Create a Plan and Track the Progress

French Novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote “A goal without a plan is just a wish”. No matter how great your resolution is, or how many times a day you are saying it to yourself, you have to make a plan for action. Jog three times a week, take the stairs instead of the escalator, whatever works for you! Put together your course of action and don’t forget to track what a great job you’re doing. You can journal your progress, track it with an app, or start a blog!

Let us know how we can help you achieve your goals this year!

Happy New Years from Sigma Wellness!

What Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?

David Van : December 23, 2013 11:16 pm : blog

You’ve heard the term ‘chiropractic adjustment’, and you’ve heard you need one, but you’re still not 100% sure what it is, and what it can do for you. Let us inform you!

A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure performed by a trained health professional who applies force, leverage, and direction, manually or with instruments, to a spinal joint. You may have done one traumatic thing that necessitates an adjustment, or it could be a collaboration of numerous bad behaviors (having improper posture while sitting at a desk day in and day out, hunching over your steering wheel, etc.).

The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore structural alignment and joint function to joints, muscles, and surrounding tissue (to get you feeling great again).

Schedule your chiropractic adjustment with Sigma Wellness and start 2014 by feeling amazing!

You’re using a ladder. ‘Nuff said.

That’s what you get for getting your daughter the deluxe doll dream house she asked for – a slipped disk! Remember, lift with the knees.

3. Shoveling Snow

All of our Midwest and mountain readers can attest – shoveling snow is hard work! Lower back injuries are a common ailment of snow shoveling, as are muscle and ligament injuries. Take breaks to go inside, warm up, and rest!

What’s a Sports Massage?

David Van : December 9, 2013 10:21 pm : blog

Chances are you’ve heard of a Sports Massage, but think you might not qualify for one since you haven’t made it the Olympics (yet). Some quick facts about Sports Massage:

1. It’s different than a ‘normal’ massage because of the goal: a sports massage is utilized for preventing and healing muscle and tendon injuries, while a ‘normal’ (or Swedish) massage is done primarily for relaxation.

2. There are a few types of sports massage.

Pre-event, where a brief massage takes place that targets the parts of your body about to be exercised.

Post-Event, a massage given shortly after the exertion for the point of getting the body back to its pre-event state.

Restorative, given during training to optimize the exertion.

Rehabilitative, given to alleviate pain and get the body back to its original state.

3.It’s not just for athletes. Anyone who engages in regular physical activity benefits from a sports massage to optimize their workouts, or heal injuries.

Whether you are a gold medalist or a weekend mall walker, there are benefits to a sports massage!

Why You Should Be Drinking Lemon Water

David Van : December 2, 2013 4:40 pm : blog

We all know water is our life source, but an often-missed fact is that enhancing your water with lemon has powerful health benefits. Here are 2 motivators to get you ordering your water with lemon!

Boost The Immune System

Lemon juice in a glass of water contains the powerful Vitamin C, which serves as an immune system booster that helps fight colds and flu. Lemon water also is rich in potassium, which is great for brain and nerve function.

Cleanses The Body

Lemon water keeps things moving. It cleanses the liver with detoxification, and is a diuretic, which means toxins are released at a faster rate. Lemon water also encourages healthy digestion by cleansing the bowel. This can aid in indigestion, heartburn, and bloating!
